22, Famous and Facing C.a.n.c.e.r: At just 22, Demi Jones was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Through sheer determination, she tells a story of survival, strength, and self-love

Love Island star Demi Jones has shared an emotional reflection on her thyroid cancer journey, four years after being diagnosed at just 22.

The 27-year-old reality star revealed she first discovered a lump on her neck in early 2021, shortly after her stint on Love Island. What began as a moment of newfound fame quickly turned into a terrifying fight for her life when doctors confirmed it was thyroid cancer.

In a moving post for the Teenage Cancer Trust’s #StillMe campaign, Demi opened up about the “significant moments” of her diagnosis, surgeries, and recovery — and how she’s learned to embrace the scar on her neck.

“I was on top of the world when I left Love Island, then suddenly I had this lump I couldn’t stop worrying about,” Demi shared. “Four years on, I’ve realised there’s no ‘back to normal’. There’s a life before cancer and there’s life after cancer — and it’s never quite the same.”

Demi underwent two major surgeries to remove a golf ball-sized tumour and half of her thyroid. Though she was declared cancer-free in 2023, she said the emotional scars took longer to heal than the physical ones.

“I had to learn to love my body again,” she admitted. “Being an Islander, there’s always pressure to look a certain way, but I’ve realised real confidence comes from within. If I had stayed negative, I would’ve spiralled.”

Demi also reflected on how sharing her story publicly helped her cope: “It was tough going through it so openly, but if my honesty helped even one person, it was worth it.”

Now cancer-free and thriving, Demi has returned to influencing and brand partnerships while using her platform to raise awareness for cancer support and body positivity. “Cancer might change how you look,” she said, “but it can’t take away who you are.”
