Child sex offender, 59, stabs himself in throat outside police station

Stephen McLoughlin, 59, was rushed to hospital after he stabbed himself in the neck directly outside Kirkby Police Station, where he had been detained by police officers

A man who stabbed himself in the throat outside a police station has been convicted of child sexual offences following a trial.

Stephen McLoughlin, 59, was rushed to hospital after being detained by Merseyside Police on St Chad’s Drive in Kirkby at around 5pm on Friday, August 26, 2022, directly outside Kirkby Police Station. The incident was captured in distressing video footage which was shared online.

Almost four years after the incident, McLoughlin appeared at Bolton Crown Court where he faced a six-day trial charged with attempting to meet girl under 16 following grooming, attempting to cause or engage a girl aged 13-15 in sexual activity, and two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child.

He was also charged with being in possession of a bladed article in a public place, and was found guilty of all charges by a jury. McLoughlin, of Kirkby, is now due to be sentenced on April 2 at the same court.

An extensive cordon was set up outside Kirky police station on the evening of the stabbing. McLoughlin was recorded inflicting the injury on himself as well as being pushed into bushes outside the station.

His injuries were described by police at the time as serious, the Liverpool Echo reports. Officers later said he was in a stable condition when he was taken from the scene.
