Jesy Nelson Shares Heartfelt Moment with Daughter Ocean
JESY Nelson has revealed that her “heart feels super heavy” as she shared an emotional update about her ongoing fight for SMA screening on social media.
The devoted mother, 34, has been tirelessly campaigning for SMA1 screenings in England after her twin daughters were diagnosed with the rare and devastating muscle-wasting disease.
Jesy took to Instagram to say, “Today my heart feels super heavy. It’s a very bittersweet moment today knowing that Scotland has become the first UK nation to screen babies for SMA.”
“We’re so close yet so far. I will never understand why we are still not testing for it in England.”
She added, “To know that my girls’ lives—and so many other children in England—could look so different if this had been there for them… But nonetheless, I will keep fighting and pushing for change. No one should ever have to go through this heartache.”
Along with her post, Jesy shared an inspiring video of her daughter, Ocean, sitting up on her own. “She’s proving everyone wrong,” Jesy wrote, filled with hope. “We’re going to get there.”
Jesy’s petition for SMA1 screenings reached over 100,000 signatures, which means it will now be debated by MPs in the House of Commons—an important step forward for her cause.
The singer and former X Factor star has been at the forefront of advocating for the heel prick test to be included in newborn health screening programs, a move that could potentially save countless children from suffering.
Her twin daughters, who have the most severe form of the disease, may never be able to walk, a heartbreaking reality Jesy has shared with the world in her raw and emotional updates.
Jesy, who gave birth to her girls prematurely at 31 weeks in May of the previous year, has been open about how the diagnosis has changed her family’s life. Her emotional journey has resonated with thousands, and she continues to fight for change so no other family has to endure the same pain.
Jesy also confirmed that a second series of her Amazon Prime Video show, Jesy Nelson: Life After Little Mix, is coming later this year, where she will once again share her family’s ongoing health battle.
The former Little Mix member, who left the band in 2020, is using her platform to shine a light on the issues that matter most to her, showing incredible strength and resilience despite the struggles.
In a heartbreaking twist, Jesy has also opened up about the dark side of fame, revealing a secret suicide attempt shortly before leaving the band—a cry for help she claims was ignored by her bandmates, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Perrie Edwards, and Jade Thirlwall.
Her candid and courageous journey has not only helped raise awareness about SMA but has also been a powerful reminder of the emotional toll that fame can take. Despite everything, Jesy remains determined to keep pushing for change, using her voice to make a difference.
