The heartbreaking grief of little Maddie, who is still struggling to accept that her mother, Married At First Sight expert Mel Schilling, is no longer with her, has captured the world’s heart.

Mel, who passed away at the age of 54 after a long and courageous battle with bowel cancer, bravely shared how she explained her diagnosis to her 9-year-old daughter. In a heartfelt interview with OK! magazine, Mel revealed that Maddie understood cancer in her own way, with the knowledge of a nine-year-old, but struggled to comprehend the magnitude of losing her mother.

As Mel’s passing becomes a painful reality, her partner, Gareth Brisbane, has been by her side, providing unwavering support throughout her journey. Mel referred to him as her “rock” during the tough times, despite his own personal battles with grief.

Mel’s strength and resilience were apparent as she continued to work while undergoing chemotherapy, even posting pictures of the highs and lows of her battle. “For every moment of energy and vibrancy, there’s an equal and opposite moment of fatigue and discomfort,” she shared. Mel’s candid updates were a testament to her unbreakable spirit, even in the face of illness.

Gareth, in an Instagram post, shared that Mel whispered her last words to him, a message that would “sustain me for the rest of my life.”
