JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Engineers hired by Madison County Supervisors believe they have identified a solution to the increasing traffic concerns on Stribling Road.
The plan involves expanding Stribling Road to five lanes, from Highway 463 to Catlett Road. This configuration will include four lanes with a center turn lane. While engineers from Garver and Michael Baker initially considered varying the number of added lanes, they ultimately opted for a consistent five-lane design throughout the project segment after traffic studies were completed.
“When schools are in, especially during the morning and afternoon hours, this road just backs up with traffic with parents dropping their kids off at school and picking them up,” long-time Ashbrooke Neighborhood resident Roger Jones said.
The existing two-lane configuration, combined with the lack of a traffic light at the Highway 463 intersection, contributes heavily to these backups, causing some residents to choose alternative routes like Dewees or Catlett to avoid the congestion.
While many residents are excited about the traffic alleviation, others are concerned that the additional lanes could open up commercial development opportunities alongside neighborhoods.
“It’s not just Lake Caroline that would have these concerns potentially, but the Lake Caroline people certainly need to understand what this amazing community end up looking like in another 5 to 6 years,” Lake Caroline resident Judi Fouladi said.
Fouladi was part of a neighborhood-wide effort to oppose the construction of a gas station at the entrance of Lake Caroline in 2024, before the developer withdrew their plans from the county.
As engineers work to plan and design Stribling Road, the Mississippi Department of Transportation will be improving the intersection at Stribling Road and Highway 463. Construction for the intersection is projected to occur in May 2026.
The planning and design phases for the five-lane Stribling Road project are currently progressing on schedule. The project is anticipated to be ready for bids from construction crews in early 2027.
