Nigel Farage has responded to the Manchester Airport judge referring him to Lord Hermer.
Last year, the Reform UK leader branded the trial of Mohammed Fahir Amaaz and Muhammad Amaad as “two-tier justice”, while the pair were on trial.
The brothers were detained at the airport on July 23 2024 after a police officer was punched in the nose.
Following the pair’s arrest, Mr Farage said: “In a system of two-tier policing, under two-tier justice, under two-tier Keir, has really taken hold.
“You only have to look at the reluctance to prosecute those violent thugs in Manchester Airport who beat up the police officers.”
The Manchester judge went on to say that he believed the comment made at a press conference on June 21 were “potentially a contempt of court”.
He continued: “I took the view that the observation made by Nigel Farage was potentially a contempt of court as it implied the guilt of the defendants.
“As Nigel Farage is a well-known politician with a considerable following and whose public utterances attract a lot of attention, I decided to refer the matter to the Attorney General so that he could consider whether there should be a prosecution for contempt of court.”
The Attorney General is able to bring forward proceedings for contempt of court against individuals who prejudice or obstruct the administration of justice – or create a risk of that prejudice or obstruction.
The judge commented that, regarding Mr Farage’s “unwelcome” remarks, they “would not adversely affect the fairness of the trial”.
Today, Mr Farage responded: “It’s quite clear that our judiciary is in an even worse state than I imagined. The politicisation of the courts will end under a Reform Government.”
