The World Grand Prix in Hong Kong held a minute’s silence for the 1979 UK Championship winner before the final session on Wednesday.

While snooker stars such as Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Selby and Shaun Murphy all paid their respects to the iconic cueist.

Virgo was also a much-loved snooker commentator and built a huge fan base for his media work.

He was well remembered for hosting Big Break alongside Jim Davidson and commentating for the BBC.

Fans loved his iconic line “Where’s the cueball going?” which he shouted whenever it appeared to be inching towards a pocket.

He was often joined in the commentary box by former cueist Stephen Hendry.

Hendry, 57, has now given a small peek into the commentary box with Virgo.

He posted a picture of Virgo on comms during a match from just a fortnight ago at The Masters.

Hendry captioned the post: “Was only a couple of weeks ago I was with JV in the commentary box at the Masters, he was the greatest to work with.

“Nobody recreated the excitement of a match like him. ‘Where’s the cueball going?’.

“Very sad news, absolutely gutted. Commentating won’t be the same
RIP JV. Thinking about you Rosie.”

The picture showed Virgo looking at the action with his microphone in hand.

The background shows a snooker table with a cue ball appearing to be very close to a pocket, which could suggest Virgo had just uttered his iconic line.

The Masters were won by Kyren Wilson as he beat John Higgins 10–6 in the final.

Virgo starred on the felt between 1976 and 1995 in which he won multiple titles.

He reached a peak ranking of 10th and was renowned for his trick shots.
