Brookside Legend Bryan Murray, Iconic Villain Trevor Jordache, Moves Into Full-Time Care as His Wife Shares Heartbreaking Alzheimer’s Update

Bryan Murray, the actor best known for his role as the infamous villain Trevor Jordache in Brookside, has now been moved into full-time care due to his ongoing battle with Alzheimer’s disease. The 76-year-old, who bravely went public with his diagnosis in 2019, has been suffering from the cruel progression of the condition, and his wife Una has shared a deeply emotional update about his current state.

In an exclusive interview with The Irish Times, Una revealed that over the past year, Bryan’s needs have intensified dramatically, making it impossible for her to continue caring for him at home. She explained, “Over the past year, Bryan’s needs became far greater, and he has now moved into full-time care. Up until now, I didn’t have time to think. My day was completely focused on Bryan and his needs. Now, I have time to miss him.”Brookside legend Bryan Murray, 76, moves into 'full-time care' amid Alzheimer's battle

The emotional toll on Una is evident as she reflects on the loss of her husband, not just in terms of health, but in the loss of their companionship. “In honesty, I’ve lost my friend and my companion. Bryan isn’t happy and he used to be such a happy person. I think it’s because he just doesn’t know about anything really. All he wants to know is: ‘What are we doing next?’ Or ‘How am I getting home?’ When we’re at home. It’s so sad.”Brookside's Bryan Murray placed into assisted care after Alzheimer's diagnosis | Radio Times

Bryan, who once captivated millions as the brutal and manipulative Trevor Jordache, is now grappling with the most frightening aspects of his illness—his memory. In 2023, he spoke candidly about his struggle with dementia, expressing the deep confusion it causes him. “It is weird. That is the bit that is frightening to me. If I can remember things from 40 years ago so vividly, why can’t I remember what happened two months ago?” he said, his voice tinged with frustration and fear.

Despite the harrowing changes, Bryan has remained grateful for Una’s unwavering devotion to him. He described her as a “god,” acknowledging her relentless support during his battle. “It is not the end of the world for me. But – there is a but. Not everyone has someone like this person to take care of them. This person… is God.”Fair City's Una Crawford O'Brien and Bryan Murray on family life and love after Alzheimer's diagnosis | RSVP Live

Bryan’s career, which began with the unforgettable role of Trevor Jordache in Brookside in 1993, marked a career filled with iconic, if controversial, moments. His portrayal of a violent and abusive character, particularly his storyline with his on-screen daughter, played by Anna Friel, remains one of the most talked-about arcs in British soap opera history. His character met a dramatic and memorable end at the hands of his wife, Mandy, who killed him before burying him under the patio, a plot twist that became a hallmark of the show.

In more recent years, Bryan continued to act in Fair City, where he played the role of Bob Charles until ill health forced him to step down from the show last year after two decades on screen. His absence is a painful reminder of the cost of the disease that has slowly robbed him of his former life and his ability to perform.

Now, Bryan’s journey with Alzheimer’s continues, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable roles, but also the heartbreaking reality of a man struggling with the cruel effects of this devastating disease. Una’s dedication to him, though, remains a beacon of love amidst the sorrow. Their journey together, though marked by sorrow, is also a testament to resilience, commitment, and the enduring bond of marriage.
