HEARTBREAKING UPDATE: Rescue workers searching the woods for Gus reported detecting a sharp, metallic scent — “the unmistakable smell of an electrical fire” — drifting through the trees near the area where he vanished. But by the time police arrived, everything was gone.

According to the rescue team, the odor appeared suddenly, strong enough that several members stopped in their tracks. They described it as a mix of burned wiring, heated metal, and a faint static-like tang in the air — a smell that “doesn’t belong in the middle of a forest with no power sources around.”

Team leader Mark Hensley said the scent seemed to be concentrated in a small clearing, roughly 40 meters from the main search path. No flames, smoke, or signs of a fire were visible, yet the air felt “charged, like the moment right before a lightning strike.”

But when police arrived less than 15 minutes later, the smell had completely vanished.
No scorch marks, no melted material, no burnt branches — nothing that could indicate a spark, a short circuit, or even a campfire. Officers conducted a sweep of the area, but everything appeared undisturbed.

Investigators now consider the report “unusual and potentially significant,” noting that the clearing lies directly along a narrow corridor believed to be one of Gus’s possible routes before he disappeared.

Authorities are keeping the area under close watch while forensic teams collect soil and vegetation samples in hopes of finding any trace of what caused the mysterious scent.

The search for Gus continues, and officials say “every anomaly, no matter how strange, could help piece together the truth.”
