“I DIDN’T ABANDON MY D.Y.I.N.G WIFE” — Richard Keys defends his decision to leave his wife of 34 years, who had c.a.n.c.e.r, to be with his daughter’s friend, 32 years his junior

Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys has fiercely defended his controversial love life, insisting he did not abandon his ex-wife during a cancer battle and blasting what he calls a “completely false narrative” surrounding his marriage breakdown.

The 68-year-old broadcaster, who split from his wife Julia in 2016 after 34 years together, has long faced backlash over his relationship with Lucie Rose — a woman 32 years younger than him and previously known to his daughter Jemma.

But now, speaking candidly, Keys is setting the record straight.

He said he has “never sat down and spoken about this before,” but felt compelled to deny one of the most painful claims — that he left his wife while she was suffering from cancer.

Keys explained that Julia’s illness occurred years earlier, revealing she battled cancer between 2008 and 2009 before undergoing successful surgery. He recalled how the family spent weeks searching for top specialists, saying they travelled relentlessly to find the best care possible.

He also admitted he continued working during that period, even being on duty at Arsenal on the day of her operation — not out of indifference, but because he wanted to protect her privacy and avoid public intrusion.

“I didn’t leave Julia dying of cancer,” he said firmly, adding that the suggestion has been deeply hurtful.

A Marriage He ‘Never Expected’ to End — Until ‘Everything Changed’

Despite the eventual breakdown of his marriage, Keys insists he never saw it coming.

He described meeting Lucie as a life-altering moment, saying she “bowled into my life” and changed everything.

According to Keys, the relationship didn’t happen overnight. He admitted it took him a long time emotionally to accept the end of his marriage, crediting Lucie’s patience and the support of his sister Susan for helping him move forward.

“I knew I wanted to be with Lucie, but I couldn’t emotionally get there,” he said, describing the transition as slow and deeply complicated rather than impulsive.

Fury Over ‘Daughter’s Friend’ Narrative

One of the most controversial aspects of the relationship has been claims that Keys “ran off” with his daughter’s friend — something he strongly denies.

He pushed back against accusations that Lucie was somehow pressured or manipulated, calling the idea “nonsense.”

Keys described his wife as a strong, independent woman with a powerful personality and a deep commitment to women’s rights, insisting the narrative is not only unfair to him — but also to her.

“People think I locked her in a room and gave her no choice,” he said, dismissing the rumours as absurd.

Lucie herself has also shrugged off criticism over their 32-year age gap, saying she has never understood why people are so fixated on it.

From Scandal to Second Chance — And Even Thoughts of Fatherhood Again

Keys’ personal life isn’t the only controversy he’s faced.

He was famously forced out of Sky Sports in 2011 following a sexism scandal involving comments about female assistant referee Sian Massey — remarks he later admitted were unacceptable, acknowledging that “we failed to change when the world has changed.”

Since then, he rebuilt his career abroad with beIN SPORTS in Qatar before eventually returning to London.

Now approaching 70, Keys says he’s embracing a new chapter — and even hinted at the possibility of becoming a father again.

He reflected that men who have children later in life often seem more relaxed and understanding, adding that he would be “a very, very happy man” if he had another child.
