Julia Bradbury has made a deeply emotional admission about life, fear and survival, breaking down in tears while filming her latest ITV series — five years after being diagnosed with cancer.

The former Countryfile presenter, known for her super-fit lifestyle and love of the outdoors, became overwhelmed while filming in Antarctica, admitting she once believed she would never again be brave enough to leave the safety of home after undergoing a mastectomy in 2021.

Julia was climbing hills and taking in the stark, snow-covered scenery for her new ITV documentary when emotion finally took over. Reaching Paradise Harbour, on the western edge of Antarctica, proved to be a turning point.

“That’s when the tears started to roll down my face,” she revealed.
“After a breast cancer diagnosis and mastectomy in 2021, I didn’t think I’d ever be brave enough to leave the safety of my home and family to do something like this again.”

The presenter admitted that both physically and emotionally, she had felt broken in the aftermath of her diagnosis.

“I was so weak physically, and so emotionally raw, that the idea of testing myself, of making this kind of  TV show — and being so far away from my partner and our children — seemed impossible.”

During the emotional moment, Julia was asked whether filming should stop. She insisted the cameras keep rolling, saying she wanted to tell her truth openly and honestly.

Reflecting further, she described the surreal beauty of the moment that made her realise she was living what she called her “second life”.

“The sky was pink in the Antarctic summer, there were icebergs on the horizon and a solitary humpback whale, idling about and blowing spouts,” she told MailOnline.
“I was sitting there thinking, ‘When I’m old, this is something I want to tell my grandchildren about…’ and that made me realise I was living my second life — the one after cancer — to the full.”

Julia was diagnosed after more than a year of tests, having first discovered a lump while travelling. She later revealed that an initial mammogram suggested there was nothing to worry about — until a consultant made a crucial decision at the last moment.

“I was sitting in the chair, about to leave the office,” she recalled.
“He said, ‘I’m going to give you another ultrasound before you leave.’ Thank goodness I had that consultant.”

Now a mother of three, Julia has spoken candidly about how her cancer journey reshaped her outlook on risk, resilience and what truly matters.

Her new three-part series, Julia Bradbury’s Wonders Of The Frozen South, sees her explore one of the last great wildernesses on Earth, charting a demanding expedition that builds towards arrival on the Antarctic Peninsula.

Episode one airs on Saturday, February 15, followed by episode two on February 22, with the final episode scheduled for March 1.

For Julia, the journey is no longer just about adventure — but about survival, gratitude and proving to herself that life after cancer can still be lived boldly.
