“I Don’t Have Much Time Left”: Johnny Ball, 87, Zoe Ball’s Father, Emotionally Admits He ‘Won’t Be Around Much Longer’ as He Opens Up About C.a.n.c.e.r and His Final Wishes

Veteran TV presenter Johnny Ball has delivered a deeply emotional reflection on life, admitting he believes he doesn’t “have long left” despite overcoming prostate cancer — yet insists he remains determined to face his remaining years with a smile.

The 87-year-old, best known as the father of broadcaster Zoe Ball, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in August 2022. After undergoing three months of daily radiation treatment, he later confirmed he had “got through it” and was now “doing fine”.

But speaking candidly about his journey, Johnny revealed the emotional toll of both illness and life’s hardships. He said he has been “kicked in the teeth in every possible way by life and by situations and by people,” yet added that he still finds reasons to stay positive.

He explained that despite everything, he cannot help but smile, pointing to the simple joys that keep him going — his wife, his dog, and the life he has built. He described himself as “very happy” and proud to still feel fit at 87.

In a moment of stark honesty, Johnny admitted: “By rights, I don’t have long left, I want to spend it with a smile on my face.”

The beloved children’s TV legend, who rose to fame on BBC’s Play School in the 1960s, also shared that his cancer diagnosis initially left him and his wife Dianne fearing the worst. The couple even discussed whether he might be nearing the end of his life, with Johnny admitting he had come to terms with that possibility.

At one point, he even considered “cashing in” and completing long-held ideas, before doctors reassured him that treatment would be successful.

Reflecting on his recovery, Johnny described surviving cancer as a “wonderful relief” and said it felt like he had been “blessed with more years” — something he does not take for granted, especially as some of his friends were not as fortunate.

Now, he continues to embrace life with energy and discipline. He revealed he maintains his fitness with a simple daily routine lasting just six to seven minutes, combining stretching exercises with light dumbbell training.

His lifestyle remains modest but consistent — starting the day with cereal and prunes, and even allowing himself the occasional indulgence of “two pints” of beer in the evening.

Beyond his health, Johnny has continued to stay creatively active. His second memoir, Stories That Must Be Told!, is set for release on March 28, adding another chapter to a remarkable career spanning more than seven decades.

Off-screen, his life remains grounded in family. He recently celebrated 50 years of marriage with his wife Dianne, with whom he shares two sons. He is also a proud grandfather of six.

Meanwhile, his daughter Zoe Ball, whom he shares with his late first wife Julia, has faced her own heartbreak following her mother’s death from pancreatic cancer in April 2024 — adding another layer of poignancy to Johnny’s reflections on life, loss and resilience.
