When DIY SOS host Nick Knowles and his team arrived at a modest home in Aylestone, Leicester, they had one mission: to change the life of 8-year-old Isla, the only girl in the UK living with mandibuloacral dysplasia, a rare genetic disorder that causes her bones to be dangerously brittle and her organs to age prematurely.

Within days, an outpouring of generosity followed. The DIY SOS team received over 2,000 volunteer applications — one of the biggest responses in the show’s history. From those, 160 volunteers were chosen to help rebuild Isla’s home from the ground up, ensuring she could move safely and live with independence.
“It’s overwhelming to think that people would come together, not for money or recognition, but simply out of the kindness of their hearts,” Isla’s mother Stacey said, holding back tears. “They didn’t just make the house accessible — they changed our lives.”

The renovation went far beyond new paint and fixtures. Light switches, door handles, and bannisters were lowered so Isla could reach them with ease. A downstairs bathroom was added, giving her a new level of independence.
Before the transformation, Stacey admitted life was a daily struggle. “I didn’t know how I was going to make the house safe for the girls. When we found out we’d been chosen, we all burst into tears,” she said. “It felt like a huge weight had been lifted.”

“There were plasterers, electricians, and builders all working in the same room — and somehow, everyone got along. The energy was amazing,” she said. “When we saw the final result, it took my breath away.”

Project manager Ian Hodgkinson said the build was one of the most emotional he’d ever witnessed.
“It’s hard to describe. Within days, hundreds of people came together and created something extraordinary — a real little miracle,” he said.
Presenter Nick Knowles echoed that sentiment, calling the project “a reminder of how good people truly are.”
“What we saw here wasn’t just construction — it was compassion in action,” Nick said. “It shows how many generous people there are across the country, willing to help in someone’s time of need.”
