In a heartfelt and emotional revelation, This Morning presenter Josie Gibson has bravely shared her ongoing struggle with a painful disorder called lipedema, a condition that affects her body in unexpected and painful ways.
Opening up on the show, Josie, 40, revealed how a concerned follower on Instagram first pointed out that her body had “typical lipedema traits” — a comment that led her to seek a diagnosis. “I had no idea what lipedema was,” she admitted, “but I always knew something wasn’t right with my body.”
Despite being fit and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, Josie struggled with her body’s tendency to hold onto fat in a way that defied traditional fitness efforts. “I can train seven days a week, but the fat won’t go away,” she shared. “It’s a fight with my genetics.”
Josie’s journey to diagnosis came after numerous visits to experts across Europe, including specialists in Berlin and London. She explained, “It’s not about overeating. My body just holds onto fat differently.”
Her symptoms were apparent in her work life too. While filming Taste of the Westcountry with chef Paul Ainsworth, Josie described how her legs would feel unbearably heavy after long days of filming, often swelling up and becoming sore. “I used to bruise like a peach,” she said, her voice tinged with the frustration of not being able to control the effects of the disorder.
In September, Josie underwent surgery to address her lipedema. While the treatment involved liposuction to tighten her skin, it wasn’t a quick fix, and the costs were overwhelming. “It was my last resort,” Josie explained. “I had to pay over £7,000 just for my calves, and the treatment is split into sections, so it’s incredibly expensive.”
Despite these challenges, Josie remains determined to stay fit and continue her work. Her openness about her struggles is not only shedding light on a rare and painful condition but also offering hope to those who may be fighting similar battles in silence.
Stay tuned for more updates on Josie’s courageous journey, and remember, it’s okay to seek help when something doesn’t feel right with your body.
