The entertainment world has lost a true legend. Elsie Kelly, beloved for her role as Noreen on the hit ITV sitcom Benidorm, has sadly passed away at the age of 89. Known for her sharp wit and comedic genius, Elsie’s passing marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned over five decades in television, theatre, and film.

Elsie’s agent confirmed the news, revealing that she passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026, after a short illness, surrounded by her loving family. She had become a household name through her iconic portrayal of Noreen, the no-nonsense mother of Johnny Vegas’ character, Geoff—also known as The Oracle—on Benidorm. Elsie even took on a dual role in series 10, portraying Noreen’s identical twin sister, Doreen, showcasing her versatile acting talent.
But Benidorm was just one chapter in Elsie’s long and varied career. Before joining the show, Elsie starred in numerous TV roles, including her memorable portrayal of the gossipy cleaner Mrs. Tardebigge in Crossroads. After a break from TV, she made a comeback with the 1996 film Intimate Relations and appeared in an episode of Skins. Elsie also brought her talents to the 1996 adaptation of The Famous Five as Joan the cook.
Her co-stars from Benidorm have been quick to pay tribute to the actress, with Crissy Rock, who starred alongside her, calling Elsie “an absolute joy to work with.” Crissy wrote on social media: “So sad to hear of the passing of Elsie Kelly this morning. We shared so many wonderful memories filming Benidorm, moments I’ll always treasure. She was an absolute joy to work with and brought so much warmth and laughter wherever she went. Thinking of her family and all who loved her. She’ll be deeply missed.”
Derren Litten, creator and writer of Benidorm, expressed his sorrow over Elsie’s passing, describing her as a “comedic genius.” He said: “So sad to pass on the news of the passing of Elsie Kelly aka Noreen in Benidorm. One of the best-loved characters in the show and certainly one of the most beloved cast members. Elsie’s acting abilities and comic genius were so natural they were almost taken for granted. Thanks for your talent but most of all your friendship Elsie. I am very sad today but also happy to think of such a wonderful life well lived.”
In a statement, ITV remembered Elsie’s beloved character, Noreen Maltby: “In Noreen Maltby, Elsie Kelly created one of British comedy’s best-loved characters, quickly becoming a Benidorm audience favourite with an always underplayed wit and spark in her eye. She will be greatly missed, and our thoughts are with her family and friends.”
Elsie Kelly leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and unforgettable moments in British television. Her passing is a significant loss, but her contributions to the industry will never be forgotten.
