Music icon Phil Collins, 75, thrilled fans this week with a rare public appearance at Buckingham Palace, celebrating the 50th anniversary of The King’s Trust. The Genesis legend, dressed in a sharp black suit and red tie, was seen using crutches as he posed alongside fellow music icons Sir Rod Stewart, Penny Lancaster, and his ex-wife Jill Collins, mother of actress Lily Collins.
This outing marks one of Phil’s few appearances since retiring from the stage, and fans were quick to note his resilient spirit. Jill shared photos from the event on social media, writing:
“Yesterday was a truly memorable afternoon spent at Buckingham Palace to celebrate The King’s Trust 50th Anniversary Party!!! Despite the torrential rain, we were proud and honoured to be there and have a few private moments with King Charles, who seemed genuinely pleased to see Phil, the very first ambassador of the Trust 40 years ago.”
Life With Health Challenges
In recent years, Phil’s life has been shaped by serious health battles. The superstar has endured five knee surgeries, an injured vertebra in his upper neck causing nerve damage, acute pancreatitis, kidney complications, and the effects of COVID-19, which further strained his health. He also suffers from foot drop, now requiring orthopedic shoes, and has a 24-hour live-in nurse to assist with medication and daily care.
Speaking candidly to Zoe Ball for BBC Two’s Eras – In Conversation, Phil reflected:
“I’ve had challenges with my knee… everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. But now I’ve got a knee that works, and I can walk, albeit with assistance, crutches or whatever.”
Despite these setbacks, Phil remains optimistic. He revealed plans to return to the studio to revisit unfinished music:
“Apart from just being back to being totally mobile and healthy, I want to go in there and have a fiddle about and see if there’s more music. You’ve gotta start doing it to see if you can do it. Otherwise, you don’t do it. That is something on my horizon.”
