Katie has previously spoken about a turning point in 2023 while filming Katie Piper’s Jailhouse Mums inside New Orleans Parish Prison. Listening to mothers separated from their children stirred something profound.

“It made me think this might be my last chance to have another baby,” she said.
“I was turning 40. I thought, if I don’t do it now, I never will.”

After emotional conversations with Richard, the couple decided to try for a third child — hopeful, realistic, and aware of the risks.

Then came an abrupt halt. Katie required emergency eye surgery — a complication linked to the acid attack she survived in 2008.

“You can’t be trying for a baby while dealing with unexpected surgeries,” she explained simply.
“That scuppered that.”

Although they later tried again, it didn’t happen. IVF was considered, but after more than 250 operations since the attack, Katie felt she could not face further hospital treatment — or the emotional toll if IVF failed.

“My body is growing weaker,” she admitted — a stark, honest acknowledgement of limits she has had to learn to accept.

In time, she made the heartbreaking decision to let go of expanding her family biologically.

Even in grief, Katie found space for love. Wanting to give care without putting her body through more, she began volunteering at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

That decision soon led to a joyful new chapter. The family adopted a dog named Sugar — a moment Katie shared with warmth and gratitude.

“We have expanded our family… Introducing Sugar,” she wrote, thanking Battersea’s staff and promising followers plenty of puppy photos.
