A former Illinois substitute teacher has pleaded guilty to criminal sexual assault after having sexually abusing an 11-year-old student.
A former Illinois substitute teacher has pleaded guilty to criminal sexual assault after she was accused last year of having invited an 11-year-old student over to her home before sexually assaulting him.
A lawsuit filed by the victim’s parents against Ally Bardfield, 34, said the boy was invited over for “play dates.”
Bardfield pleaded guilty last week while in court for a disposition hearing, according to local outlets WCIA, Fox 32, and WCIS.
Bardfield, who was a substitute teacher with the Decatur Public Schools system, is due back in court in September for sentencing, according to WCIA. The outlet reported that she could face up to 40 years in prison.
Her behavior came to light last April. WCIA, citing authorities, reported that the boy went to Bardfield’s home multiple times in 2023, and that the boy returned to the former substitute teacher’s home two more times in May 2024. WCIS reported that the boy stayed over at Bardfield’s home at least once.
According to a Mt. Zion Police Department statement at the time of Bardfield’s arrest, the boy’s mother said she noticed her son acting “differently” after the second visit to the teacher’s home in May 2024.
The boy’s mother told police she then looked through the 11-year-old boy’s phone and discovered sexual messages between the boy and his teacher, as well as CashApp payments of up to $700 sent from the teacher to the boy, according to WCIA.
When confronted by police, Bardfield initially told investigators that the boy had made advances toward her, WCIS reported.
The Mt. Zion Police Department said in its statement last April that Bardfield was “a long term substitute teacher assigned to [the boy’s] 6th grade class.”
“These allegations are shocking, especially when the alleged perpetrator is a person in a position of trust,” the police department said. “The Mt. Zion Police Department is fully committed to working with victims and their families as they deal with the trauma that results from these incidents.”
