Brave young fundraiser Tony Hudgell was given a heartwarming surprise after being rushed into emergency surgery — waking up to a visit from his football hero Harry Maguire.
The 10-year-old, who has captured hearts across the country with his courage, resilience and extraordinary charity work, was taken to Sheffield Children’s Hospital after suffering a hip fracture. His adoptive mother Paula revealed that Tony endured a “tough 48 hours” and spent three and a half hours in emergency surgery, where doctors repaired the fracture using two titanium plates.

But despite the frightening ordeal, Tony was soon smiling again when England footballer Harry Maguire arrived at his bedside. The Manchester United star, who is patron of Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, brought gifts including a Manchester United poster, pencil case and football — a gesture that clearly lifted Tony’s spirits after his operation.
Photos shared from the hospital showed Tony beaming beside Harry, looking delighted despite the bandages on his arms and the exhausting hours he had spent in theatre. For a child who has already endured more pain than most adults could imagine, the visit was a beautiful reminder of how small acts of kindness can bring light into the darkest moments.
Paula shared the emotional update online, thanking the hospital team for their care and praising the surgeon who repaired Tony’s hip. She also revealed that former Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill had given her a supportive hug while Tony was in surgery — another touching moment of compassion during an anxious day.

Tony’s story is one of unimaginable suffering transformed into astonishing strength. As a baby, he was left with life-changing injuries after horrific abuse by his birth parents. He was rushed to hospital at just 41 days old with multiple organ failure and sepsis, and doctors feared he was only seconds from death. Later, both of his legs were amputated because of the severe damage caused by the injuries he sustained.
But Tony’s life did not remain defined by cruelty. After being adopted by Paula and Mark Hudgell, he began an extraordinary new chapter filled with love, protection and purpose.

Over the years, Tony has become one of Britain’s most inspiring young campaigners. In 2020, inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore, he set out to walk 10km in 30 days to raise £500 for the hospital that saved his life. Instead, he raised more than £1million — eventually helping generate over £2million for charity.
His courage has been recognised at the highest levels. Tony became the youngest person ever to receive a British Empire Medal from King Charles for his services to the prevention of child abuse. He has also been praised by Prince William and Princess Kate, and has built a touching bond with the royal family.
Tony has attended Princess Kate’s Christmas carol service and has even been pictured speaking with William and Kate. Last year, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis sent him letters at their mother’s annual Christmas event — a sweet gesture for a boy who has become known for his warmth, determination and huge heart.
He has also met Queen Camilla during a private tea party in the gardens of Buckingham Palace, adding another remarkable moment to a life that has already touched so many people.

In recent weeks, Paula had shared the joyful news that Tony had begun walking unaided after surgery to reconstruct his permanently dislocated hip. His legs are now more equal in length, making movement easier and giving him fresh hope of doing what he loves most: playing football.
Paula described the progress as a “complete miracle,” saying Tony was already excited to get back to kicking a ball. True to form, he even managed a little kick while recovering — perhaps sooner than he should have, but with the cheeky determination that has made him so loved.

His latest emergency surgery is another hurdle, but if Tony’s life has shown anything, it is that he faces every challenge with astonishing bravery. He has endured operations, pain and setbacks, yet still finds ways to smile, inspire and give back to others.
Harry Maguire’s visit was more than a celebrity hospital appearance. It was a moment of joy for a young boy who deserved something wonderful after a terrifying few days. And as Tony smiled beside his football hero, one thing was clear: his courage remains as powerful as ever.

Tony Hudgell has already changed lives through his fundraising, his campaigning and his unstoppable spirit. Now, as he recovers once again, the whole country will be hoping this brave little hero is soon back on his feet — and back with a football where he belongs.
